ABOUT NEWLYN MEADERY

The Newlyn Meadery offers something for everyone seeking a fun and atmospheric dining experience.

The menu is varied, offering vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, as well as smaller portions for children or those with smaller appetites. A particular favourite is our self serve salad bar offering a good selection of freshly prepared local produce.

We cater for large groups, especially families; we have several high chairs for use and a baby changing facility.

If you find the stairs to the main restaurant a problem or need wheelchair access please telephone us for details of a different entrance.

The ‘Gaiety’ cinema was built in 1905. The owner was the projectionist and his wife played the piano throughout the silent films.

When the cinema ceased to trade, the building was purchased by a local businessman. In 1964 the bottom part of the building opened as a wine bar, with medieval décor, selling Cornish Mead and their special extra strength fruit wines.

It was decided to add food to the menu and in keeping with the theme served chicken and chips on wooden platters and the customers were expected to eat these with their fingers, very different for those days!

Business was good, so in 1974 the restaurant upstairs, seating approximately 120 people, was opened. Over the years Newlyn Meadery has become one of the most popular restaurants in the area.

RESTAURANT BOOKINGS & MEADERY TAKEAWAY SERVICE

As we DO NOT take bookings and due to the popularity of the Meadery, it is advisable to arrive early to have a table straight away.

If the restaurant is full when you arrive you can wait in the bar area downstairs or in the summer sit outside by the river and sample our drinks while you wait.

We offer a take away service for food and Cornish Mead Wines. If you have enjoyed any of the Cornish Mead wines you can buy some to enjoy at home. These are available in different sizes and flavours.

We are proud to have loyal local customers and the added bonus of many returning holiday makers.

So, please come and capture the essence of Medieval times, with our famous jugs of Cornish Mead wine, the very popular ‘chicken in the rough’, eat with your fingers (although cutlery is available for those that would prefer), and have it all delivered to your table by costumed ‘wenches’
